60163:

or, A Brief Objective Study on the Scale of Pony

please note that the following is subjective observation and is not intended to be taken (too) seriously

in season 2, episode 11 Hearth’s Warming Eve we see Scootaloo and some other filly with their tongues stuck to a giant candy cane which Twilight Sparkle describes as being ‘eight feet tall.’

using this as a point of reference:

now assuming the average height of a foal to be 2’1” (63.5cm), we then use another image as a reference point to determine the height of an average mare:

thus having determined that the average adult female pony is roughly 3’5” tall (104cm) we can now begin using them as a ‘standard’ unit of measurement in regard to pony architecture. let’s begin with one of the most common locations in the show - twilight’s treehouse library. in order to ‘properly’ measure the treehouse, we need two things:

  1. a complete and preferably unobtrusive view of the structure
  2. a pony at approximately the same scale as the aforementioned

the reason for the latter requirement comes down to a matter of perspective - we can’t use just any image of a pony or a pony from the foreground or background of a scene. an ideal situation is a pony standing up straight in a doorway.

a great source of ponies standing in doorways comes from pinkie pie’s ‘singing telegram’ scene from the cold open of season 1, episode 25 Party of One. twilight just so happens to be the first pony she visits:

as can be seen twilight appears to be roughly 3/4 as high as the door of her library. using our predetermined size of an average mare as a unit of measure we then take a look at the treehouse overall:

the library is very roughly 3/4s of the door times eleven in both height and width, which scales out to 37’ 7” square (11.5m).

say for example you wanted to determine how large a scale model of the treehouse would be for blind bag ponies. a blindbag/”pocket pony,” which to my knowledge is the smallest of toy merch, is approximately 2” tall (alicorns and male ponies not withstanding as I don’t have any for reference.) this works out to 1/20.5 of an ‘actual size’ pony, establishing a rough ‘scale.’

coincidentally, the very near 1:20.3 is a popular scale for model makers and model railway enthusiasts, where an average human figure would be about 3.75 inches tall. using the aforementioned estimated size of twilight’s library, a blindbag scale twilight’s library would be roughly 22” square (56 cm). that’s pretty big, considering!

so why did i bother compiling all of this? I offer you three explanations:

  1. ..but actually because I love making scale models and making ponycraft appears to be a fairly lucrative market, so I put myself together some rough research

the preceding article has been a post about ponies. it should not be taken seriously or otherwise intensely observed. it is purely intended for entertainment.

now go clean your room.
