This animation is absolutely glorious. Just take a moment to appreciate that this was all done by somebody’s hand; that they slaved over this, and this was the result of a human, not a computer. It’s completely perfect.

are we not gonna talk about the fact that the reflection is Ariel and Prince Eric?

I’ve seen this post like 364 times, but I only noticed that reflection is different now! O.o

Oh my god people the reflection isn’t different it’s just an awful quality gif.
In the actual version, the reflection is actually only just slightly darker and clearly the two of them. 

Also can we talk about how this isn’t really clever animation and how “this was done without the work of a computer” is kind of BS because the whole trick to old timey Disney movies was that they drew on top of stock footage. It’s just a tracing of a video of people dancing.

The old timey disney movies looked amazing because of rotoscoping which is just as cheap as CGI special effects in live action block busters. The Disney movies made in the 80s and 90s were not better because of computers, they were better because animators got better at conveying emotions through characters. The reason Ariel is more expressive than any other princess before her is just because animators were way better at drawing exaggerated-but-realistic faces in the 80s than they were in the 50s.

Also, look how great these ‘modern animation’ scenes look, which are clearly neither computer animated nor rotoscoped:

Computers did not hurt or cheapen animation in any way. They’re mostly used for drawing backgrounds in moving shots.

Unless you’re talking about 3D animation in which case fuck you still because 3D computer animation is just as difficult and artistic as hand drawn animation.

Literally everything about animation has unilaterally improved as time progressed. The only arguable ‘set back’ in terms of quality is maybe the popularity of simple talking head animation on television shows and hyper cost-efficient stuff like Scooby Doo or Family Guy. But even then, those shows are not watched for their high quality animation, they’re watched because the simplicity of their animation allows them to do things with the narrative that wouldn’t be possible with live action or more detailed animation. And their existence doesn’t detract from the existence of animated movies in any way.

Your nostalgia is completely baseless.

Modern animation is great.
